Argentina
Thursday 8th
April
Quick update on where we are – after a 22 hour day we
arrived in Buenos Aires at 5 this evening and got a shuttle in to town. We are staying in an apartment for the next week, partly to give us a
chance to have a bit of our own space and be able to cook for ourselves for a night or two and partly because of
the value, only €70 per night.
Our flights today took us through Santiago,
Chile though we only transited it – Still plenty of work going on to tidy up after the earthquake, some of
the shops in the Airport were restocking and getting ready to reopen after some corrective work and a paint
job. Having said that, the airconditioning wasn’t too great,
perhaps that was still on the “to do”list. Nothing obvious on the
runway (just as well!) and the airport seemed to be operating almost normally.
Judging by tonight’s very brief visit out for
food, cost is not going to be a problem here at all! A very
light evening meal, one course for each of us plus 5 (large) glasses of wine worked out somewhere south of
€30! (After 22 hours travelling, you need something to get you back
in the swing of things!) And we didn’t even go looking, it was just the first place that looked OK (‘bout a
block from where we are staying). Service was excellent, very
bright and cheerful and portions were huge – the ravioli I had would easily equate to two back home and in taste
it was much better. The first tourist brochure we picked up had an
advert for a restaurant with 18 different types of meat, so steaks’ are our next night’s food
search!
Plenty photos to go up from NZ and some late ones from
Aus, will try and do that over the next few days. After that, it’s
off to Peru and a trip on a riverboat on the Amazon – details here if you are
interested.
